Abstract

This study entitled: “The Controls and Purposes of Beating Disobedient Wife in tafsir al-Tahrir wa’l-tanwir Compared to the Opinion of Jurists” aims to address disciplining the disobedient wife by "beating" which has triggered much debate among supporters and opponents. The study states that beating disobedient wife has its controls that Ibn Ashour mentioned in his Tafsir al-Tahrir wa'l-Tanwir without indicating that this discipline has controls; so the Researcher deduced and discussed them and stated their purposes. The Researcher used the descriptive analytical approach, the deductive and inductive approach besides the comparative approach, and came out with a set of conclusions and recommendations. One of the most important of these conclusions is that beating a disobedient wife is the last option of disciplining her, and it does not apply to all disobedient wives. Although this way of discipline is legitimate, it is a disliked act. The most important recommendation is that the husband should not resort to “beating”, and he has to make every effort to use other ways of discipline, and to pay attention to the controls of beating disobedient wife so that he won’t be unjust.
