Abstract
This study examines the narrations transmitted by Shuʿayb ibn Abī Ḥamza al-Dimashqī (d. 162 AH) in which al-Dāraqutnī identified discrepancies. The objective is to critically analyze these narrations to uncover the nature of the underlying defects (ʿilal), assess the positions of al-Dāraqutnī and other critics, and discuss the acceptability or rejection of these reports based on an inductive analytical methodology.
The study concludes with several key findings, the most important of which include:
The most prevalent types of discrepancies involved substitution, addition, and omission.
The majority of Shuʿayb’s narrations fall within the category of ṣaḥīḥ (authentic); those that do not reach this level are due to deficiencies in the narrators below him.
Al-Dāraqutnī favored two of the narrations and suspended judgment on the rest.
Recommendations:
Scholars should pay greater attention to compiling and studying the narrations of trustworthy transmitters found in the books of ʿilal (hidden defects).
It is important to clarify their status and identify the causes of any defects through precise scholarly analysis.
