" Restriction by (Innamā) and the Position of the Restricted Element According to Grammarians, Rhetoricians, and Qurʾanic Exegetes (An Analytical and Critical Study)

Abstract

This research aims to unravel a specific grammatical particle, namely the particle 'Innamaa'  (إنما)، in terms of its restrictive or non-restrictive implications, while utilizing evidence and discussion in the process. It also seeks to identify the part of the expression to which the restriction implied by 'إنما' applies and to refute erroneous claims directed towards this matter. I have adopted both an analytical and critical approach simultaneously. The study concludes with several key findings, including that 'إنما' is predominantly used to indicate restriction according to most scholars, that the domain to which the restriction applies is the final part of the given expression, and that none of the objections to ascertaining the restricted part of the expression is free from error.
